The famed Travancore artist, Prince Raja Ravi Varma (1848-1906) started painting at an early age, and with the guidance of the ruling King, Ayilyam Thirunal Maharaja, he was formally trained in water colour by the court painter Rama Swamy Naidu. He also received instruction from Theodor Jenson, a British painter, who introduced the prince to the European tradition of oil painting. The bulk of Ravi Varma paintings draw upon Hindu mythological and literary sources. In 1873, Ravi Varma won the First Prize at the Madras Painting Exhibition and his work was also exhibited in Vienna.
